From humble beginnings and international backgrounds. Built in the green spaces of Malmö.
Late one December night in 2018, Evan Farbstein was walking through Folkets Park when he noticed a skating rink. As it turns out, it is really just the frozen over Folkets Park fountain that kids splash around in during the summer months. As any good hockey enthusiast would do he grabs his skates, stick, a couple pucks and hits the ice.
As he skates around he starts wondering how many other people in Malmö miss playing hockey – he decides to put out a message on social media…
That first year Folkets Puck didn’t even official exist, it was just a group chat – a chat that we still have on-going to this day, but now with 200+ people (as of 2024).
Enough people came out to be able to play 3 on 3 most nights, be we were amazed when more than 8 people showed up.
As the spring came, we said our goodbyes and see you next seasons – little did we know, that season 2 would be the start of something really special.
As December 2019 rolled around we were ready for the second season of hockey in Folkets Park.
Evan had already made amazing progress securing a partnership with Folkets Park which made Wednesday nights officially hockey night – we were also able to lend out skates and sticks for free.
Goals where purchased and the excitement was building. December started well, but in what happened in January, no one expected.
We started an Instagram account (folketspuck), and Malmö city started advertising hockey night in Folkets Park around the city. Even Sydsvenskan showed up and wrote an article for their newspaper.
That February Hockey Night in Folkets Park hit 32 participants in one night, an official förening has been founded, a partnership with Folkets Park has blossomed.
This time, when the season ended, hockey didn’t. Folkets Puck expands and includes roller hockey and renting ice time – not only that but participation numbers through the spring and summer are fantastic!
At the same time the updated logo is co-designed by a group of members and the first Folkets Puck jersey is also designed and goes on sale, as does a ton of other merchandise.
Over the years we continued to grow, started competitive teams and in 2024/25 the big goal is to launch a youth division.
We hope you enjoy your experience with us and hopefully we can continue to expand our programming and become even more accessible to the community.
As of the summer of 2024, we have 80+ paying members, a group chat community with over 200 people and run over 75 events per year.
